About Skillful StudioS

Skillful StudioS is the codename for Artist/Creator Matthew M. Skillern.

Matt (aka : Skillz) lives and works as a creator/ illustrator/Cartoonist in Indianapolis, IN and like many artists, he has been drawing and creating in some form since he was a child. Lacking discipline and needing to meet other artists, Matt attended Herron School of Art and Design. There he was able to experiment with different forms of art including illustration, drawing, printmaking, painting, graphic design, sculpture, ceramic hand building and wheel throwing.

Graduating from Herron in 2006, Matt has become known for his traditional approach to comics, commissions and freelance work. He loves working with ink and color, using an array of materials to create his one of a kind retro focused brand of art. His work as been described as incredibly detailed, gritty, colorful, psychedelic, funny and clever. Some of his greatest influences include... Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, Frank Frazetta, Earl Norem, John Buscema, Bernie Wrightson, Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Frank Miller, Steve Dillon, Greg Capullo, Erik Larsen, Rob Liefeld and Kurt Cobain (to name a few). Comics, Movies, Music and Toys also have a huge impact on the work Matt creates.

Matt's first love has always been comics and over the last decade he has managed to carve out a place for his work in indie comics. He is known for his creator owned comic titles, the COMIC and The Freaking Future as well as work on indie comic books like Guerrilla Publishing's Tales from the Cryptic Closet and more recently some cover work for Victory Comics. Matt has also created work for Marvel/Upper Deck and Star Wars/ Topps sketch card sets.

Thanks for your interest in the work and the artist who works hard to make it.
