.) The Human Centipede 2: I actually watched this on Valentines day, which was the day it was released straight to video, and man... why? I mean if you haven't seen the first film it is pretty disturbing, but it's more comical than anything. It had a wink to it... Anyway, Part 2 is like most horror sequels completely over the top. How is it even possible to have a sequel to a film where 3 people are sewn together top to bottom? Look, I don't even know? But basically, there's a dude and he's a fan of the dude who made the Human Centipede in the first film and high jinks ensue. All I will say to warn you about this film is bigger Human Centipede and conducting poop! You're welcome.
.) Audition: I have to say this... This movie is great. And it's great because it is actually scary, but wow it is disturbing and not even close to needing a re-watch! This a Japanese horror film, and it centers around a lonely widower who decides to hold these secret auditions for a new wife. He becomes interested in, of course, the absolute wrong girl and what follows it some of the most messed up imagery you could imagine! Torture, keeping people as deformed pets, and inappropriate sexual violence. You have been warned.
.) Society: I don't know what it is about this film? I saw it in the 90's on Showtime or something when I was a teen, and it seriously freaked me out! It is about this kid from a "well to do" family who starts to notice strange happenings in his town... Like there is some sort of weird conspiracy. We see strange glimpses of rich people's body parts doing inhuman things, and eventually we find out why. I can't really say much more than that w/out giving too much away. The film is weird because it feels really creepy and earnest, but then seems like it's meant to be comical, but becomes nasty!? It's a weird film, man.
.) Requiem for a Dream: God... Don't do drugs kids! In fact, parents show this movie to your kids, quick! I am not trying to say this is a bad film it's actually a very well executed piece of cinema, and I think that "disturbing" is the tone it's going for. It is about drugs and how they effect relationships and world perspective. I have always said that this film goes from a movie about the dangers of drugs to a full on horror film... And a disturbing one at that! It is a very "artsy" film as well, which just adds to the dirty and gross tone of it. We see sex for drugs, people completely changing into destroyed monsters and people losing limbs! I saw this movie w/ a girl I was dating back in like 2000, and I remember we couldn't even talk properly to each other and ended up in a weird fight after we saw it. I have never watched it again, but remember all of it's unsettling glory!
.) Dead Girl: This movie is super messed up for so many reasons... But mainly there is a dead girl that two teenage boys find( teenage boy's scary as hell) and the girl turns out to be a zombie. Now imagine the moral questions that would arise in a horny teenage boy... Like messed up teenage boys that were raised wrong though. And then think about the fact that they have a naked girl zombie that they can use to say... get revenge on bullies among other sick delights? This movie is super hard to watch at times and not re-watchable, like at all. But the idea is definitely interesting and it does keep you interested in the way you rubber neck a car crash. Warned.
.) Videodrome: This film is cool, but has some really messed up imagery and content. It's focuses on this dude becoming obsessed w/ investigating this snuff type of television station? That's the only way I can really describe it? There is a bunch of scenes throughout the film that imply media and man becoming reliant on one another. Some of these images are super disturbing, like the one when a man's stomach becomes a flesh VCR that resembles a secret lady part. It's pretty hard to un-see this film.
.) Last House on the Left(original) : I watched this film for the first time a few years back and it stuck w/ me. It is super brutal and involves violent rape scenes and extremely graphic murder and torture. Messed up! That's all I have to say about that.
.) El Topo: This Movie is super cool looking... It was a Midnight movie from 1970. The midnight movies were like Night of the Living Dead and Pink Flamingos.... Indie style movies that were too strange, sexual and violent to be released to the masses. El Topo is incredibly weird and disquieting. It involves a village of what could only be considered freaks, Brutal sex and violence, and it has a sort of strange spiritual tone, which makes it feel even more dirty. That's a good word for El Topo... You just don't feel clean while you watch it. It's a beautiful movie though... it almost has a Sergio Leone sort of look. It is just messed up.
.) Fire in the Sky: What ever you believe or don't believe is irrelevant. Bottom line, the idea of Alien abduction is more than disturbing. And the way this concept is shown is both frightening and will cause you to lose sleep. It's true.
.) Antichrist: Willem Dafoe is in it, which makes this film instantly disturbing. I can't even explain this film because I had no idea what the hell I was watching when I saw it. It has a lot of sex and violence that is super inappropriate... And when I say inappropriate I mean there are things that should never.... ever be associated w/ sex in this film. I feel sick ever thinking about one of the scenes in this movie! It literally is every mans worse nightmare and Willem Dafoe is literally probably the only actor on the planet who would act out a scene like it! Oh God NO! Don't even watch this movie man! It will ruin your life forever! It sucks you in too... Leave it alone man... Don't watch it!
So normally I would do an eleven, but recalling Antichrist just destroyed my brain! All I can say is that if you like disturbing things... Disturbing films... this is your list. There are a lot more out there I haven't seen and am working up the nerve to watch one day. just because sometimes you have to see something once and make your own call! Movies like Eraserhead and Cannibal Holocaust are supposed to me crazy messed up as well, but I have not yet seen these films so I can't comment. So if you have any disturbing film experiences you'd like to share please do. As always thanks for reading! Sweet Dreams!
