Going to Purdue had been a dream of mine since I was very young. My Uncle Steve went to school there, I attended Purdue basketball camp there and I loved Purdue basketball when I was a kid too!!! So the day I stepped out of my Mom's car and looked up at the ALL MALE dorm of Cary Quadrangle (when you wait too long to fill out your housing form they put you w/ a bunch of other "sausages" that waited to long to fill out there housing forms too), I should have been happy to be there. Well, I wasn't... The combination of nerves and already feeling ill was reeking havoc on my insides... I couldn't even help move my own stuff in- I was so sick. At the time, it was one of the biggest things I had ever done. I eventually felt better and met my neighbors who were super nice and cool guys (Scott and Adam). They sort of looked out for me that week of "boiler gold rush." (that was where everyone got there a week before school started to do all these silly team building and unity activities... It sucked) As that week ended and I started to feel more like myself, all these other guys started to move in around me. I could see them because my door was literally right by the stairs and I saw everyone who walked past. In fact, some of the friends I would soon meet had stated to call me "Guy on the couch" which was from the movie Half Baked. (I was always chilling on the couch watching movies. playing video games or of course, reading comics... between classes of course, kids... Stay in school.). Anyway, Soon I had made friends w/ a bunch of the guys in my hall... It was such a cool floor, we all became fast friends and had a lot of common interests. Like Movies.
My other Neighbors were Dave Mustard and John Mackel. They both knew each other from back home in Ft. Wayne, Indiana or "the region" as I would learn it was called. They were some of the best dudes you could ever meet!!! Anyway, these guys and I got to be great friends and we laughed a lot together. They were always up late (like me) and a lot of times we would watch movies together or listen to music.( John was always listening to Alice n Chains Unplugged. Also a favorite album of mine.) Anyway, John was like the first dude I ever met to have a full on DVD collection. (DVDs were still pretty new in the late 90s and early 2000's.) We were always joking around and getting all "mystery science theater" w/ the films we'd watch, but one night it got weirdly intense...
Dave, John, and me were all hanging out late... It was probably like 3am or something. And we started talking about movies we loved and why... Dave had recently hooked up his computer to his TV and made it into this giant monitor... He literally always had his keyboard near and basically had a "command station" at his finger tips. So I don't know who started this, but Dave and me started renaming popular movies w/ the word John, Jonathan or Johnny in them... I'm talking There's Something about Mary becomes There's Something about Johnny and Star Wars: Ep 4: A New Hope becomes John Wars: Ep John: A new John. You get it...This went on for hours and hours and Dave was typing all of them the whole time from his "command center"... I am pretty sure the sun was coming up when we finally finished and we had renamed like 500 movies or something and we laughed the whole time! It was seriously one of the funniest experiences I have ever been involved in.(and no we weren't drunk) My face hurt so bad and when I think about it now it still makes me laugh. We watched a lot of movies that year... Hell, I have watched and discussed movies my whole life... BUT that was one of the most committed and intense movie experiences of my life!!! It just went on and on!!! I think John eventually was even trying to sleep, but he kept adding movies while we'd be thinking! And that made everything even funnier to us! Good times!
So That's basically what happened. I don't talk to those guys much, anymore, but I really do value the time I had w/ all of them that year. And I miss those times. Anyway, Thanks for the kind words "Johnny Mack!" You were always all heart! AND I am pretty sure that either you or Big Dave have designed your own Ironman suits by now! (they were both "tech guru's" )
